Who we are.
Our candles are hand poured in small batches with pure 100% soy wax and exotic essential oils, complete with 100% lead-free cotton wicks or natural wooden wicks for a fervent burn. Our soy wax is all natural and is free of colorants. As our candles burn, they emit negative ions, cleaning the air around, rejuvenating the body and our wooden wicks emit a soothing crackling sound.
Why I Started Making Candles for Fenton Candle Co.
I’ve always had a love for candles—the warm glow, the calming scents, the way they can completely transform a space. But as much as I enjoyed them, I started noticing something frustrating. Some of the candles I purchased didn’t burn well at all. They either burned unevenly, left behind a lot of black residue, or had wicks that struggled to stay lit. After a bit of research, I discovered that these issues were often caused by additives in the wax, which are used to make candles cheaper to produce. What was even more concerning to me was learning that those additives could potentially release harmful chemicals when burned.
That was the turning point. I wanted to enjoy candles that were clean, safe, and luxurious, so I decided to dive deeper into the world of candle making. I began researching different types of wax, and after experimenting, I chose 100% soy wax. Not only is it all-natural and free from harmful additives, but it also burns cleanly, lasts longer, and doesn't release the black soot I had grown so tired of seeing.
With that, Fenton Candle Company was born in December of 2019. I started small, selling my hand-poured candles to a few local retailers, and things were really starting to pick up. But then, as we all know, the world shifted in March 2020. The pandemic forced me to put a pause on the candle business so I could focus on my main business and adapt to the challenges we were all facing.
As we emerged from the pandemic, I felt a renewed passion to return to Fenton Candle Company and grow it further. I was fortunate enough to partner with Medawar Jewelers in Flint, Fenton, and Frandor Lansing, and that’s when I started creating something truly special—jewelry candles. Each candle is still hand-poured with 100% soy wax, but now, there’s an extra touch of luxury hidden inside—a piece of beautiful jewelry, buried within a silver capsule.
Fenton Candle Company is proud to be a woman-owned, locally operated business, creating candles with luxury scents and all-natural ingredients. I’m excited to continue this journey and share these thoughtfully crafted candles with others who want more than just a pretty scent—they want something they can feel good about burning in their homes.
Why we use 100% soy wax.
Paraffin candles (often disguised as 'blends') are harmful to your health. They also contain GMO, bleach and fillers. Burning paraffin wax creates highly toxic benzene and toluene in the air as they are both known carcinogens. In fact, the toxins released from paraffin candles are the same as those found in diesel fuel fumes or as we all know, petroleum.
Paraffin wax is used in more than 95% of candle making done today, mainly because it is very inexpensive. Paraffin is the leftover by-product from the petroleum refining process. Studies have shown that this petroleum by-product can release the same harmful carcinogens into the atmosphere as your car produces when gasoline is burned. When a paraffin candle in burned, it produces toxic petrol-carbon soot, which can blacken walls, furniture and ceilings and contaminate ventilation ductwork in your home. This soot goes into the air you breathe and can be hazardous to your health.
Food For Thought: In 1986, proposition 65 was passed with the intent to protect California citizens and the state's drinking water sources from chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm, and to inform citizens about exposures to such chemicals. Paraffin candles contain up to 11 of these known carcinogenic compounds. These 11 compounds have been deemed 'toxic air contaminants' by the state of California. This is not only a health problem, but it is also a moral problem. We need to demand safer alternatives.
Fenton Candle Co. uses soybean wax (which doesn't contain carcinogenic compounds). Our candles contain no petroleum and we use cotton zinc cored wicks or natural wooden wicks. We never conduct animal testing and we choose to only use vendors that can guarantee the same degree of ethical standards. Our soy wax contains no herbicides or pesticides and is 100% biodegradable and produces no petrol-carbon soot. As if that weren't enough, Fenton Candle Co. candles burn up to twice as long as paraffin candles.
